The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization founded on October 24, 1945, after World War II, with the aim of promoting international cooperation and maintaining international peace and security. The UN replaced the ineffective League of Nations, which was established after World War I.

The UN is composed of 193 member states, each of which has an equal voice in the General Assembly, the UN's main deliberative body. The UN also has several specialized agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the International Labour Organization (ILO), that work on specific issues such as health, nuclear energy, and labor rights.

The UN's mission is to maintain international peace and security, promote sustainable development, protect human rights, uphold international law, and provide humanitarian aid in times of crisis. The UN accomplishes its goals through various programs and initiatives, such as peacekeeping missions, economic development programs, and efforts to combat climate change.

The headquarters of the UN is located in New York City, and it has additional offices and agencies located in different parts of the world. The official languages of the UN are English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Arabic.
